About the Workshop
Understanding material behavior under realistic operating conditions is critical for advancing sustainable energy technologies. In this context, in situ and operando microscopy and spectroscopy techniques have become indispensable, enabling the real-time observation of energy conversion processes. However, these measurements typically average material responses across macroscopic regions. As a result, they conceal how structural, compositional, and optoelectronic heterogeneity influence local activity and light-driven processes, how conversion reactions proceed locally, and how nanoscale imperfections influence material stability. These local phenomena are not only vital for individual energy conversion systems but also reveal common underlying mechanisms governed by material composition, interface and defect properties that can limit overall device performance. To foster interdisciplinary dialogue and uncover synergies, this workshop will bring together scientists from these interconnected research directions. By integrating diverse perspectives and methodologies, we aim to deepen the local understanding in energy systems and to highlight emerging experimental approaches capable of capturing material function at relevant length and time scales.

Travel
The BAdW is located in the heart of Munich and can be reached easily by public transport. Travel by car is not recommended, however, as parking can be difficult.
By train: From Munich Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) you can take U-Bahn lines U4 and U5 and from Munich East Station (Ostbahnhof) line U5. From the stop at Odeonsplatz, it is a 3-minute walk to the BAdW.
By plane: Munich has an international airport (MUC) from which the S-Bahn (S1 and S8) can be taken to Marienplatz. From there, it is an 8-minute walk to the BAdW.
Registration
Participation in the workshop is free, but registration is required via e-mail to Johanna Eichhorn (johanna.eichhorn@tum.de).
Please indicate in your registration e-mail if you would like to join our conference dinner and if you have any dietary requirements.
