Explore. Examine. Experience. That was the motto of the Open Day at the Garching Research Campus, which took place at the same time as Germany’s popular Open Doors Day on 3 October. Thousands of visitors discovered the numerous open doors on campus and what makes science so exciting. They could look behind the scenes of research laboratories and carry out smaller and larger hands-on experiments, listen to exciting experimental presentations, and experience the science slam. Researchers can also be humorous and entertaining.

The varied program offered something for all age groups. At e-conversion, which traditionally appeared with the three other Munich Clusters of Excellence SyNergy, ORIGINS, and MCQST, everything revolved around the topic of energy: building batteries from lemons was as popular as ever, and the banana piano fan club has also grown. The energy wheel kept going round and round and always wanted to ask the interested visitors questions.

Even cult presenter Christoph Biemann, the face of the German TV show “Sendung mit der Maus” for decades, traveled from Cologne to Garching with a WDR camera team to see the great activities for children for himself. The well-known duo explored several stations, including the Munich Institute of Integrated Materials, Energy, and Process Engineering (MEP), where the e-conversion office is also located. The MEP showed, for example, how to drill for hot water and how geothermal energy works.

You can find a short review of what the mouse and Christoph experienced at the Garching research campus on the WDR website.
