We grieve for the late Professor Regina de Vivie-Riedle. She passed away after a long, serious illness on 20 June 2024 at the age of 66. With the chemist who researched and taught at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, we are losing a great, highly esteemed colleague who inspired us both scientifically and personally.

Regina de Vivie-Riedle studied chemistry at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and obtained her doctorate there in 1987 under Professor Sigrid D. Peyerimhoff. She completed her habilitation in 1997 at the Institute for Physical and Theoretical Chemistry at the Free University of Berlin in the field of theoretical chemistry.

After working as a C3 group leader at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, Garching (1997–2002), Regina de Vivie-Riedle was Associate Professor of Theoretical Chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich from 2002 until the end of her life. Her research focused on the numerical description of chemical dynamics using quantum dynamic methods. Her research has provided profound microscopic insights into the dynamics of chemical reactions. During her career, de Vivie-Riedle has significantly shaped the field of theoretical femtochemistry in Germany.

Regina de Vivie-Riedle made outstanding scientific achievements in theoretical chemistry and quantum dynamics and provided outstanding support to the faculty for many years as Dean of Studies and Women’s Representative. Her legacy will endure through the numerous publications and the generations of chemists she trained and inspired.

The funeral of Regina de Vivie-Riedle will take place on 18 July 2024 at the Nordfriedhof in Munich at 11:15 am.
